How many drops of oil go in a diffuser?
A common starting guideline is three to five drops per 100 mL of water, so a 200 mL tank takes roughly six to ten drops. A larger or more open room needs the higher end to be noticeable, while a small bedroom does well on the lower end. This calculator picks a per-100 mL rate from the room size and scales it to your tank.
Why scale the drops to the room?
Scent disperses to fill a volume, so the same few drops that perfume a small study will barely register in an open-plan living room. Matching the drop count to the floor area keeps the scent present without being overpowering — and stops you emptying the bottle trying to scent a big space with a small-room dose.
Can I use too much oil in a diffuser?
Yes. Overloading the water rarely makes a room smell better — it just wastes oil, can leave residue in the tank, and may be too strong in an enclosed space, especially around children, pets, or anyone sensitive to scent. Start low, run it for a while, and add a drop or two only if the scent is too faint.
Does the diffuser type change the number?
Somewhat. Ultrasonic diffusers mist oil suspended in water and match this water-based guidance well. Nebulising diffusers use neat oil and no water, so this calculator doesn't apply to them.
